What is an internship for?

An internship is a period of practical work that should help you learn a field while contributing to it. It can be a first workplace example, not a demand for a finished career.

Judge the role

Look for clear responsibilities, guidance from a team, and a scope that fits the time available. Check location, dates, eligibility, compensation, and required documents. If the role promises learning but offers no support, ask about supervision before accepting it.

Show what you have done

Class projects, student clubs, volunteering, and part-time work can show relevant skills. Name your part in the work and what came of it. For a software role, explain what you built and how you tested it. For a design role, show the prototype and what you learned from feedback.

Keep a record

During the internship, note problems you worked on, decisions you made, and results you can verify. Those details become stronger résumé entries and clearer interview answers later. Our résumé guide explains how to turn them into a focused application document.
